It’s been ten long years since Carrie and co last graced our small screens with their funny, frank and fabulous take on life as single women. While the first episode aired waaay back in 1998, the dating dilemmas of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte still ring true today and the same can be said of their style. Sure, some of their outfits may have been just a little eccentric and not entirely wearable, but just like the sharp, sexy script, it was these risks that made the show, and Carrie, iconic. Just like starter or dessert*, Edward or Jacob**, flats or heels is one of life’s big decisions. Is it really a case of fashion vs. functionality? Or can we have the best of both worlds? We ask the Simply Be team where they stand on the great debate and bring you our top picks from both camps.
Annaliese – Flat out fabulous
“My love affair with heels has been a rocky one, fraught with stumbling blocks (emphasis on the stumbling) and more twisted ankles than I’d care to mention. While I can’t deny that heels are often the icing on my outfit’s cake, they are also be the reason I fell over on the dance floor at the office Christmas party and my feet were too sore to walk on the next day. I have to ask myself: is it worth it? Continue reading
Just as much about the dresses as it is the winners, Sunday night played host to the biggest night in Hollywood; the Oscars. True to form, it was a display of stunning style and breath-taking beauty, with stars of the big screen pulling out all the stops to impress on the red carpet. While the Academy was clearly most impressed with Gravity and 12 Years a Slave, we take a look at the outfits that won our coveted seal of approval!
After wowing the fash pack at the BAFTAs, rising star Lupita Nyong’o continued her winning style streak with a stunning sky blue gown by Prada. Worn with a plunging neckline and subtle gold accessories, the 12 Years a Slave actress cemented her place as one to watch not only for her acting talents (she walked away with the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role) but also for her fantastic eye for fashion. Every now and then, we all find ourselves in a bit of a sticky style spot; those days where you can’t make head nor tail of the latest trend, you’re in a panic over what to wear for that party, and your wardrobe just isn’t making any sense. We’ve made it our mission to solve those tricky style dilemmas so you can enjoy doing what you do best: looking and feeling utterly fabulous…
Style Dilemma No. 1
I can’t afford a brand new wardrobe for spring; what three essential items should I invest in to stay stylish through the new season?
To make a fashionable impact without stretching the purse strings, look to a couple of classic spring pieces and throw in a directional trend for good measure. With spring weather typically difficult to predict, a versatile cover-up should be your first port of call. Make it a mac and you’ve got yourself a timeless, light and oh-so chic coat that will see you through what’s left of winter and well into spring in style.
Next up, your precious pennies will be well spent on another spring favourite: florals. While flower prints can be found growing all over trousers, shirts and tees, the piece you’ll get the most wear out of is a floral dress. Simply style with flats and a blazer in the day and switch to heels and glam accessories come nightfall. It’s the perfect piece to see you through the transitional weeks too; tights on for wintery days, tights off come summer!
For your final piece, inject a little high fashion into your new season wardrobe with the couture doll trend. Inspired by the pretty, candy-coloured looks of the SS14 catwalk, a sweet separate in the shape of a light blouse will earn you some serious style points.
On Wednesday, we shone the Simply Be style spotlight on the brightest stars from the music industry at the 37th annual Brit Awards. With a red carpet well-trodden by some of the biggest and best music acts to have ever existed, it is a night famed for fashion, fantastic performances and a fair share of celebrity scandal (we’re looking at you Messrs Cocker, Block and Brand!).
While it’s safe to say that last night’s show was a decidedly better behaved affair than previous years, the stars did not disappoint in the style stakes. We take a look at some of our favourite looks from the Brits 2014.
Alongside big sis Kylie, Dannii hit the red carpet in a figure-hugging black dress that just pipped her siblings outfit the post to make it onto our list.
While Kylie opted for a tight PVC number adorned with two big bows, the ex-X Factor host opted for a demure frock with glitzy borders and a sexy lace insert that travelled all the way up her thigh. Continue reading
The most glamorous night in British cinema, the annual BAFTA awards took place on Sunday at a rather chilly Royal Opera House in central London. In true award ceremony style, the acting elite descended on the capital in their Sunday best and lit up the red carpet with their gorgeous gowns and slick suits. From a shimmering Fearne to an androgynous Ange, we round up the hottest looks from the night…
On presenting duties, Fearne showcased her trademark rock chick-meets-vintage-glam style with this glitzy gold gown. Beautifully adorned with sparkling details, seductive smoky eyes and worn with a retro wavy bob, Fearne’s gorgeous look had a touch of old school Hollywood glamour. Continue reading
Spring is more than just a speck on the horizon and that means a shift from miserable winter downpours to…errr…slightly less miserable April showers. For a cover-up that will see you through the warmer part of winter, those pesky spring showers AND onto cool summer nights, look no further than the trusty parka…
Rooted in the swinging ‘60s, the classic parka takes on a thicker, fur-trimmed guise throughout Autumn/Winter but strips back the insulation for a lighter, showerproof look come spring. It’s the latter that we’ve crowned this week’s worthy Wardrobe Hero, thanks to its smooth combination of practicality, versatility and style. Unquestionably casual, this is a coat that works best thrown over laidback separates but, with a few clever choices, can work wonderfully with a slightly more dressed-up look. We’ve taken a parka jacket from our SS14 collection and (using each of the colour options available) created three very different but very gorgeous looks…
Wear me…when it’s chilly
When it’s time to say a fond farewell to your winter coat, you can rely on the parka to provide warmth, protection from light showers and some serious style points. We’ve paired this parka with a fluffy knit and snood to keep you toasty, while the bucket bag and brogues add a dash of androgynous flair.
Who would have guessed that a 1995 movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma would lead to a two decade style crush on preppy skirts and plaid? Be neither a fashion victim nor ensembly challenged and check out these totally bitchin’ outifits inspired by nineties teen classic, Clueless. Continue reading

Keep it sweet with this candy-coloured combination. While the subtle sorbet shades and feminine shape of the jacquard prom dress flirt with ‘50s fashion, the cream courts and soft pink lingerie add just touch of sexiness for an under-the-clothes confidence boost. Compliment this nice ‘n’ naughty look with sparkling jewels in a retro flavour.

But don’t lock yourself away until spring; take a look at our top tips for staying gorgeous through these rough beauty conditions…
There’s nothing lovelier than hot shower when the mercury drops, right? Wrong! As tempting as it is to blast the boiler and step into a steaming tub, hot water actually strips your skin of its natural oil barrier; a barrier your body needs to trap in moisture.
Lower the temperature and resist the urge to soak for half an hour (no more than 15 minutes), then pat dry with a towel. Lock in the moisture with a milk-based cream, perfect for softening skin and warding off irritation. This Burt’s Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion will do the trick.
